Surely you have already heard Venice called the Serenissima. But have you ever asked yourself why that name? What does it come from? Today we want to tell you this curiosity about our wonderful city.
Venice was one of the four Repubbliche Marinare of the Italian territory. They were areas that enjoyed independence from the central government, were administered by a Doge and were very important commercial ports on the sea.
According to tradition, the Doge was also called “serenissimo” and for some people this is why Venice is also called the Serenissima. Others believe that it was so called because it was the most prosperous of the Repubbliche Marinare and reigned on the Mediterraneo.
Venice was also very tolerant of foreigners who arrived in the city welcomed by an atmosphere of peace and tranquility. No one will ever know exactly how to answer this question, but two things are clear: in Venice you live “serenissimi” and you can eat well.
