The lion of Saint Mark is the centuries-old symbol of Venice, conceived as the symbolic representation of the evangelist Saint Mark, the patron saint of the lagoon city.
The legend tells that the during a journey, an angel appeared to the evangelist with a prophetic announce: Venezia was going to be his resting place after his death. The prophecy comes true when his relics were transported to Venice avoiding the customs control. San Marco becomes the patron saint of the city and is represented in the form of a winged lion: the animal symbolizes the strength of his words; the wings represent the spiritual elevation, while the halo states his sanctity.
